Check Engine Lights

Check engine lights can be a nuisance and a blessing. On one hand the light usually indicates an emission item, possibly as simple as a loose gas cap. On the other hand it can indicate something more serious such as a slipping transmission or an engine failure. The key is to know which you are dealing with.

Some parts stores have hand-held scanners and will scan your car for free to determine the basis for the indicator light. For instance, a simple misfire could be spark plugs, wires, water in fuel, catalytic converter, valve spring, bad rings, pistons or a simple vacuum leak. However, for complete information there are tests for these components to verify that they are indeed bad. Even after the test, it’s wise to have a physical examination by a professional or do individual component testing.

Sometimes allowing something simple to go unrepaired can lead to more serious problems. A catalytic converter for instance can lead to a valve job. Now you just added $1,500.00 to your bill. Furthermore, certain counties in Texas like Collin, Dallas, Tarrant etc., will not award a safety inspection with a check engine light on.

To sum it up, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but if it is do it sooner than later.
